New solutions for resource utilization and recycling

NOAH is continuously working on developing new technology that can be part of the circular value chain and utilize more of the resources from current processes.

Over a 10-year period, NOAH has had a separate unit for research and technology development, which has developed new technology and collaborated both nationally and internationally to find new treatment solutions for fly ash and other inorganic residual fractions from industry. Among the major initiatives are CO2 utilization (CarbonTech), salt recycling (ReSalt), Cinderella, EarthresQue, soil washing (Frano) and gypsum production. The technologies build largely on each other and have been driven forward through collaboration across the value chains. In 2024, we established Langøya Competence Hub where we collaborate with customers and other partners on new recycling solutions.

All research and development in the group is linked to one of two main tracks:

  1. Further development and improvements of current processes
  2. Different recycling solutions related to the fractions we accept

Further development of current processes

We are working on process improvements and optimizations that make the fractions we receive more stable and less dangerous. The goal is to be able to utilize all or part of the reception facilities as a resource.

Recycling

This work includes developing technology to utilize and recover more of the resources in the waste. The fractions we receive that are classified as “hazardous waste” contain some components that may be technically possible to recover. Testing and laboratory activities are carried out both on Langøya, with consultants and other technology partners. In recycling we work with:

  • Production of pure white gypsum from process water and excess salt. Read more HERE.
  • Salt recovery – realized efficient handling and separation of the salts potassium chloride, calcium chloride and sodium chloride for use in other industrial processes. We have shown that this is technically possible through the pilot plant Result.
  • Using CO2 from industrial flue gas to stabilize hazardous waste.

Within the category ordinary waste we recycle surplus materials from construction and construction on a large scale. Together with Franzefoss, NOAH runs the company FRANO, which specializes in washing contaminated soil and reselling clean aggregates for construction and construction. When FRANO opened in November 2025, this became Oslo's first full-scale soil washing facility, and a prerequisite for the capital to be able to meet its climate goals. Read more at frano.no.
