Environmentally friendly shipping with electric sea drones
NOAH switches the ash transport to all-electric sea drones that go directly from Moss to Langøya. The conversion saves time, the environment and local traffic congestion.
When a waste operator and a food wholesaler join forces for transport, it creates a new way of working together on logistics solutions.
"Here we have looked beyond our own industry and looked for partners with whom it would previously have been unthinkable to collaborate on transport. But new technology makes it possible to think and act differently," says NOAH logistics manager Jon Arvid Holmberg.
For over four years, the food wholesaler ASKO, through its subsidiary ASKO Maritime, and NOAH have had a close dialogue, and a dream of utilizing the new and environmentally friendly transport route between the east and west sides of the Oslofjord in cooperation. Now the dream has come true, and NOAH has entered into an agreement on fixed departures with ASKO's sea drones Langøya.
"The maritime drone solution is ground-breaking. Here, ASKO is at the forefront of the world when it comes to implementing new and environmentally friendly transport solutions. We are very proud to be part of the project and contribute to the transport of fly ash from incinerators becoming more efficient and environmentally friendly," says NOAH logistics manager Jon Arvid Holmberg.
With the drone solution, the car trailers are loaded in Moss and transported from there directly to Langøya on electric and eventually autonomous vessels. The transporter thus saves 5-6 hours per car and can use the car much more efficiently.
"This changes our entire logistics system and makes us more efficient, digital and future-oriented. We believe the collaboration with ASKO on the one hand and with Sørum Transport on the other, sets a new precedent for the logistics industry," says Holmberg.
The maritime drone solution saves both the "big" and the "small" environment: It reduces the emissions from fly ash transport, and not least, it reduces NOAH's heavy transport through the cramped town centers of Holmestrand and Horten by 6000 cars a year when the solution is eventually in full operation.
"When we now gradually move 6000 cars over to sea drones, this will be felt in the center of Holmestrand. We are not giving up on this. We continue to work on reducing traffic even further," continues Jon Arvid Holmberg.
The drone solution changed the entire customer and supplier link and has meant the purchase of new vehicles with removable trolleys and new forms of collaboration. Recently, NOAH entered into a long-term cooperation agreement with Sørum Transport until 2030. "Sørum will be an important cooperation partner for us going forward. In this restructuring, quality - rather than price - has been decisive," explains the logistics manager.
